Australia has fallen over 15,000 homes short of its ambitious target to build 1.2 million homes by 2029, with just 44,884 homes completed in the September quarter instead of the required 60,000.
Western Australia delivered 5,924 homes, falling 8.2% below its quarterly target of 6,454. While WA’s shortfall is smaller than other states like the Northern Territory (down 78.6%) and Tasmania (down 46.1%), the figures highlight the urgency to ramp up construction.
The Property Council warns that meeting these targets is crucial to easing the national housing crisis. With rising demand and affordability challenges, WA must address barriers such as red tape, labor shortages, and taxes on new builds. The state’s performance will be key in achieving the 2029 target and providing homes for Australian families.
