The push to expand Perth’s Metronet ferry service has gained momentum, with Limnios Property Group’s Managing Director, James Limnios, championing the initiative as a vital step towards easing congestion, boosting tourism, and promoting sustainable urban development.

A Vision for an Expanded Ferry Network

James Limnios has long advocated for a more extensive ferry network along the Swan River. Speaking on 6PR Radio’s Perth Live, he emphasized the potential benefits of extending ferry services to Burswood, Belmont, and Maylands. Limnios believes that expanding the network beyond its current limited stops would provide a much-needed alternative to road transport, reducing congestion on major routes while also enhancing Perth’s appeal as a waterfront city.

“Despite Perth being built around one of the most beautiful waterways in the world, we still only have one ferry service, which has been in operation for nearly 130 years,” Limnios stated. “With over 2 million people now calling this city home, it is time to embrace our waterways as a viable and efficient transport option.”

Government Commitment and Industry Involvement

The Cook Labor Government has already made strides toward expanding ferry services, announcing a $107 million investment in five new electric ferries and two additional stops at Applecross and Matilda Bay. Additionally, a $2 million feasibility study is underway to explore further expansions, including possible stops at Burswood, Belmont, and Maylands—locations highlighted by Limnios as key growth areas.

To support local industry, the government has also launched an Expression of Interest (EOI) for WA-based businesses to design and manufacture the new fleet. With a focus on modern, environmentally friendly transport solutions, the proposed ferries will feature electric power options, bike storage, and increased passenger capacity.

A Boost for Property Development and Urban Growth

Beyond the immediate transport benefits, Limnios sees the expansion of ferry services as a catalyst for property development and economic growth. “A well-connected ferry network will stimulate infill housing and commercial investment along the riverfront suburbs,” he said. “The areas surrounding these proposed ferry stops will become more desirable for residential and mixed-use developments, encouraging sustainable growth and creating vibrant urban communities.”

Limnios also noted the political implications of the expansion, pointing out that Labor’s strong support in riverside suburbs during the recent election reflected public enthusiasm for the Metronet on the Swan initiative. “Voters endorsed the government’s vision for better river transport, and we hope to see that commitment translate into tangible infrastructure improvements.”

The Future of Perth’s Public Transport

With increasing population density and shifting transport needs, expanding ferry services is a logical step in Perth’s urban planning strategy. Limnios Property Group remains committed to advocating for smart, sustainable development solutions that benefit both residents and the broader economy.

As the EOI process progresses and feasibility studies continue, Limnios encourages all stakeholders—government, industry, and the community—to support the initiative and help shape the future of Perth’s public transport system.
