Carport Conversion: October Style Guide

Do you love entertaining when the warmer weather rolls around, but often find your internal dining area doesn’t quite fit as many guests as you’d like?

Many of us buy a home and then BANG!– as if right on cue, we’re both excited and blinded by the hopes of hosting regular BBQs for family and friends, summer garden parties, family events, and weekend gatherings. Unfortunately for some, these dreams can often stop at the front door – especially if that door is not one that leads to a large backyard or outdoor entertaining space. Yet one of the best ways to get around this (that’s equally as clever as it is cost effective) is simply re-purposing the space you already have.

A carport is one inclusion that often comes part and parcel with many Australian homes, and is a feature that when utilised properly, can transform even the smallest of spaces into an entertaining haven. Whether you no longer need your carport or simply have enough space to expand, check out the following Style Guide for a range of handy tips and inspiration.

1.      One of the easiest and most popular ways to convert your carport is to turn it into a BBQ area. While the BBQ itself is the main attraction, if you’re working with a smaller space simply add some eclectic deck chairs and a small table, as well as a couple of plants to brighten up the area. Hint: hanging pots and plants are the perfect way to add a bit of greenery without taking up precious square-meterage on the ground.

2.      If you can access your carport from the kitchen, there’s a great opportunity to seamlessly integrate your indoor and outdoor spaces. Set up an outdoor dining table and chairs, and lay a coloured rug to add a warm and personal touch. For the handymen among us, there are some great DIY furniture ideas that’ll help keep the costs at a low. Hint: for additional seating, cover up a visible air conditioning unit with a seated bench, or re-purpose tree stumps and barrels into stools and bar tables.

3.      The look and feel of a great outdoor space often starts from the ground up, and choosing the right paving material can make a great difference to your aesthetics and your budget. Hint: gravel is generally less expensive than traditional pavers, and with the right styling can look just as good!

4.      If your home is lacking a porch but you’d love an outdoor oasis, consider decorating the area with a couple of bean bags, a rocking chair, a side table or some shelves. Hint: add vibrancy to your newly converted space with colour, special accents, and plants, but be sure to style this space with practicality (i.e. choose furniture that can be easily moved, and make use of the wall space by incorporating floating shelves as opposite to a solid unit).

Whether you’re a long-term homeowner or a first-time buyer, converting your carport is an affordable outdoor living solution that doesn’t require you take out a second mortgage. Remember to use the space you’ve been given and get creative with how you re-purpose to suit your lifestyle.

Regardless of size, when life gives you lemons you make lemonade!
